Software Modernisation

Replace the old system safely, audited, rebuilt in phases, migrated and cut over without stopping the business.

Next moduleJust now

Software modernisation NZ businesses keep putting off comes down to one fear: breaking the system that runs everything. This page is for established businesses that need to replace old business software one person understands. You get a phased plan that swaps it out piece by piece while the business keeps trading.

The problem

the system nobody dares touch

  • One person knows how the old system really works, and they retire next year.
  • It runs on a server in the storeroom that nobody dares restart in case it never comes back.
  • It cannot talk to your accounting software, the website or anything modern, so everything gets exported and retyped.
  • Our insurer and auditor both asked about it, and we had no good answer on security or backups.
  • The developer who built it retired years ago. The last email bounced. There is no documentation.

What Superstack builds

software modernisation in phases

Legacy software replacement fails when attempted all at once. We replace the old system one module at a time, keeping old and new connected, so the business never runs on half a system.

Example workflow

The audit gives you the list and the order. You pick the first module, usually the one causing the most pain. We rebuild it, migrate its data and run it beside the old system until the numbers match. The old system keeps doing everything else until its turn comes. The data syncs on its own. You decide when to start, when to trust it and when to switch.

Integrations

We read the legacy database itself, whether Access, SQL Server, FileMaker or custom, so an Access database replacement starts from the real data. The new modules connect to your accounting software for invoicing, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace for sign-in, and modern APIs the old system never had.

Any system with an API connects. Click a logo to visit them.

Add AI when it actually makes sense

AI is optional here, and the migration works without it. Read how we use AI and where it fits in business process automation.

Web app, mobile app and customer portal

Web app

The office runs the rebuilt modules in a browser: orders, invoicing, customer records and the reports nobody has to export any more. No install and no single PC.

Mobile app

Staff who never had access to the old system get what they need on a phone: a driver confirming a delivery, a technician checking stock, a manager approving an order.

Customer portal

Once the customer data is clean and in one place, a portal becomes possible: customers check an order or download an invoice themselves. All three run on the one new database.

Build options

FAQ

Yes. That is the whole approach. The old system stays live and does everything it does today until each module has been rebuilt, migrated, run in parallel and signed off. The interim integration layer keeps the two in step, so staff never enter the same record twice while both are running.

By rehearsing it. We map every field, migrate into a test copy, and compare counts and totals against the old system until they match. Your team checks real records, the awkward customer, the oldest job. Only then do we run the final move, with the old data kept as a fallback.

It depends on how many modules the old system holds and how messy the data is, which the audit tells you. Because we replace one module at a time, the first improvement arrives early, and nobody waits on a big launch. The plan gives a date for each module, and you set the pace.

No patch fixes an unsupported server, a missing developer or a database nothing can connect to. When those are the problems, rebuild. When the system is stable and one function is broken, patch it and plan the replacement. Rebuild legacy system modules one at a time and the risk stays small.

It is retired, not just unplugged. Some businesses keep it read-only after cutover so old records can be checked, then we take a final backup, cancel licences, remove access and wipe the machine. You choose when. If your auditor or insurer needs confirmation the old data is gone, you get it in writing.

Continuing as you are has a cost too, just spread out: the hours spent exporting and retyping, the work you cannot take on because nothing integrates, and the risk of a failure with nobody to call. We put those beside the phased plan, module by module, so you compare like with like.
